As consumers, we often purchase products with no real thought put towards what we will do with it when we no longer need it. Waste disposal is of great concern to all of us and tires especially create a particular problem. When we purchase new tires, we pay a fee and the old tires just "go away". But do they?

Annually, 280 million tires, or a pile 100 yards long and over 400 feet tall are discarded. That number continues to increase annually, and simply dumping them is no longer an option. More than 8 million tires were being stockpiled in one dump in New York alone. Within New York State, the Department of Environmental Conservation estimates that 12 million tires are discarded every year.
